Oxford Castle, a major feature, was built in 1071. Oxford University is the oldest English-speaking university, however the exact date of its foundation is unknown. There is evidence to show that there was teaching in the city in 1096. The university and its buildings are a massive part of the city’s history and well worth viewing during a visit.
Oxford is the home of Britain’s oldest public museum, the Ashmolean. The city’s other museums include the Pitt Rivers Museum, Museum of the History of Science, Oxford University Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Oxford.
Some of the historical buildings to see in Oxford are Christ Church; now a university building, Magdalen College, St John’s College and New College. Blenheim Palace, which is on the outskirts of the city, is the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. The stunning building and gardens make a popular day out.
