Oxford by Night - Pubs and Restaurants

As Oxford dates back to 900 A.D., one can safely say that people have been eating and drinking in the city longer than they've been studying history and literature. The industry is not surprisingly very well established, with dozens of traditional British pubs and restaurants, as well as a plentiful assortment of international eateries. Of those, the most memorable and most popular are those where you can experience the true flavor and history of Oxford itself.

This list only touches the surface.

Again, if there are further questions about pubs or restaurants in the area, don't hesitate to contact our customer service desk here at the Remont Oxford at 01865 311020.

Browns Bar & Brasserie
5-11 Woodstock Road, Oxford
01865 511995

Brown's Bar & Brasserie is a popular spot for students and tourists alike. Located at 5-11 Woodstock Road, this busy modern restaurant serves British and international cuisine, plus a wide range of real ales. Don't miss the house specialty, steak and Guiness pie.

The Trout Inn
195 Godstow Road, Oxford
01865 510930

The Trout Inn rambles along the river at Wolvercote Village and is known for its lovely grounds overlooking the ruins of Godstow nunnery. You'll enjoy the live peacocks and the bridge that joins the inn's terrace with a garden on the other side of the river. The dining area seats 284 people, but still gets crowded, a testament to the popularity of the Trout Inn. It features British and traditional cuisine and is favored by students and their families staying at hotels in Oxford.

Fishers Restaurant
36-37 St. Clements, Oxford
01865 243003

Fishers Restaurant consistently ranks among the top restaurants in the U.K., offering a comprehensive selection of seafood and shellfish from fish and chips to steamed mussels to sea bass. Fishers is very popular among students and their families, although tourists seek it out as well from Oxford hotels. Fishers has a modern, elegant atmosphere.

Eagle & Child
49 Giles St., Oxford
08721 077 077

Affectionately known by locals as the Bird & Baby, the Eagle & Child is a long and narrow pub where J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis used to drink and talk literature. One of Oxford's oldest pubs, it also served as the headquarters for the Chancellor of the Exchequer during the British Civil War in the 1640s. You'll find a full variety of real ales at the Eagle & Child as well as standard pub fare.

The Head of the River
Folly Bridge, Oxford
08721 077 077

Popular among students, The Head of the River Pub is located at Folly Bridge right on the river and has an outside terrace where you can watch rowing or punting as you wile away the day. The Head of the River serves a variety of beers, wines and spirits as well as traditional pub fare, including roast dinners and sandwiches. Warning: the pub can get very crowded, especially during summer sport events.

The Bear
6 Alfred St., Oxford
08721 077 077

The Bear is one of the oldest pubs in Oxford, which sounds like an understatement since it literally dates back to 1242. The Bear is very old and very tiny, located at the corner of Alfred and Blue Boar near Christ Church. The Bear has outdoor seating that overlooks the river, but it can get quite crowded. It is known for its great real ale and for its collection of framed neckties hanging on the walls.

The Turf Tavern
4 Bath Place, Oxford
01865 243 235

Another oldie, the Turf Tavern dates back to the 13th century and has a long, long history. It reportedly was one of poet Dylan Thomas's favorite drinking holes as well as the place where a former Australian prime minister broke a Guiness World record by drinking a yard of ale in 11 seconds. The Turf Tavern is located in an alley off Holywell and New College Lane near the Bridge of Sighs in close proximity to Oxford hotels. It has two big bars and three outdoor courtyards, but still gets very busy in the summer.

The White House
2 Botley Rd., Oxford
01865 242823

The White House was the original western toll house to the city. It closed in 2007 and was recently reopened after renovations and now offers two full pubs and an open terrace in the back. At the White House, you'll get traditional British food as well as international cuisine, served in an atmosphere described as relaxed and unpretentious.

Pierre Victoire/Cafe Rouge
9-11 Clarendon St., Oxford
Pierre Victoire: 01865 316 616
Cafe Rouge: 01865 310194

Oxford's most popular authentic French restaurants are located on the same block at 9-11 Clarendon Street in Oxford. Both are small and cozy and perfect for romantic dinners. Pierre Victoire serves quality French food in somewhat rustic surroundings with a menu that is pretty static - lunch is a popular meal. Cafe Rouge, on the other hand, is a little more upscale and sophisticated with an a la carte menu that changes almost daily.

The King's Arms
40 Holywell St., Oxford
01865 242 369

Built in 1607 and named after King James I, The King's Arms is very large and very busy, catering to the upper crust of the Oxford student body. It's on Holywell Street near the Bodleian Library and was the last of the Oxford pubs to allow in women in 1973. It is rather famous for its list of real ales, wines and whiskies. Many, many famous patrons have visited and photos of them - including the Queen Mum - adorn the walls.

The White Horse
52 Broad St., Oxford
01865 728 318

Built in 1590, The White Horse is certainly one of the oldest pubs in Oxford and one that is full of character. It is located on Broad Street near Blackwells Bookstore and the Sheldonian Theatre and claims to be a favourite of the TV detective Inspector Morse, along with Winston Churchill and Bill Clinton. You'll find delicious traditional pub fare such as roast dinners and sandwiches, plus an impressive selection of real ales.
